The safe baseline comes before tuning
Tuning assumes that the rig and its attachments are sound. Before turning anything, inspect visible wire or rod, terminals, tangs, pins, split rings, chainplates, turnbuckles, mast step and deck partners as applicable. Look for corrosion, cracking, bent hardware, displaced pins, damaged threads and movement in surrounding structure. Do not clean away a suspicious mark before photographing it. A defect in a load-bearing part is an inspection problem for a qualified rigger, not a setting to compensate for.
Identify the rig configuration and find the instructions for that mast, boat or class. Masthead and fractional rigs, swept and in-line spreaders, deck-stepped and keel-stepped masts do not share one universal sequence. Confirm which stays control rake, sideways alignment and fore-and-aft bend, and mark the starting position without weakening any locking method. Build an observable, reversible sequence
With the boat supported as the manufacturer expects, begin from a symmetric baseline and sight the mast from several useful positions. Record rake references, spreader alignment, visible bend and port-to-starboard differences. A halyard can sometimes provide a repeatable comparison to matching deck points, but only if its attachment, stretch and lead are understood. Measurements are aids to the manual, not substitutes for it. Secure every adjusted fitting in the specified way before loading the rig.
The first sailing check should use manageable conditions, clear water and a crew able to observe without distracting the helm. Compare both tacks. Note mast shape, unusual pumping, lee-side behavior, sail draft, luff wrinkles and helm balance. Avoid chasing a perfectly rigid appearance from one photograph. The rig is a loaded structure and some response may be expected; the maker's instructions define the acceptable pattern. If a new noise, sudden slackness or fitting movement appears, unload the rig and inspect.
Change one control, then close the loop
A useful tuning log records date, wind range, sea state, sail plan, crew position, starting marks and the exact adjustment. It then records what happened on each tack. That discipline prevents a sequence of small turns from becoming an unknown new baseline. If the observation does not improve or conflicts with the manual, return to the prior marks rather than compensating somewhere else. Photos taken from the same position are especially valuable for comparing mast bend over time.
Sail shape and mast tune interact, so a persistent draft or helm problem is not proof that the rig needs more tension. Check halyard, cunningham, sheet, traveler, vang and sail condition as separate variables. Also confirm that the sail was designed for the mast bend available. When a stable, documented rig still produces the same mismatch, send the log to the rigger and sailmaker together. Their shared view is more useful than an isolated tension figure from another boat.

Never tune around damaged hardware
Stop if a terminal, stay, chainplate, mast section, turnbuckle or supporting structure is suspect. Do not copy a tension, turn count or rake value from a different rig. The applicable manufacturer manual and a qualified rigger govern consequential adjustments.
Separate rig shape from sail trim
