FIELDNOTE

Sail fit matrix | Sailmaker's Fieldbook

Compare boat context, sail, cloth family, wind band and use before asking for a sail design.

HOW TO USE IT

The matrix is a starting point, not a sail order.

Filter by a boat context or use, then read across the row. The cloth family is deliberately broad. The correct finished sail depends on the design, load path, rig, local conditions and the sailmaker who measures it.

Wind bands use Beaufort language as a common reference. The Met Office publishes the ranges; forecast gusts and sea state still deserve their own line in the log.

Beaufort 2 to 4
Use
Learning and day sailing

Prioritize forgiving handling, simple repair and a clear reef or depower path.

Verify next: Class rules, mast bend and local school practice.

Woven polyester
Wind band
Beaufort 2 to 5
Use
Coastal day trips

A durable, serviceable baseline often matters more than the lightest package.

Verify next: Sail area, UV exposure and storage routine.

Woven or laminate, design dependent
Wind band
Beaufort 2 to 6
Use
Fast coastal cruising

Balance shape stability against impact, aging and the repair route.

Verify next: Sailmaker design, reef geometry and cloth warranty.

Cloth family
Class-approved woven or composite
Wind band
Beaufort 2 to 5
Use
Racing and training

Load path, class rules and repeatable trim notes outrank a generic material label.

Verify next: Current class rules and measurement certificate.

Cloth family
Durable woven polyester baseline
Wind band
Beaufort 3 to 6
Use
Offshore passages

Handling margin, UV resistance and serviceability deserve early weight in the decision.

Verify next: Passage plan, furling system and professional inspection.

Reaching in settled conditions

Light cloth changes handling and stowage demands; a patch kit is not a structural plan.

Verify next: Apparent wind range, launch system and recovery drill.

SOURCES AND DATE

The row wording is editorial and conservative. Open the source, then confirm the boat-specific design with a sailmaker or the boat manual.
